Asian Games – Bharat bag 5 medals on Day One

Bharatiya athletes have won three silver and two bronze medals on Day One so far in Asian Games at Hangzhou in China. Three of those medals came from rowers while air rifle shooters brought home two more. Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh claimed a silver in the lightweight men’s double sculls event while air rifle team claimed a silver medal in the team event. Ramit Jindal, who was part of the rifle team, then claimed a bronze medal in the individual event.

In Football, Men’s team qualified for the Round of 16 after a 1-1 draw against Myanmar. However, the women’s team’s campaign came to an end after a 0-1 defeat against Thailand.

In Women’s Boxing, reigning World Champion, Nikhat Zareen advanced to the 50 kg pre-quarterfinals after outboxing the World Champion silver medallist Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam 5:0. Meanwhile,19-year-old pugilist Preeti Pawar outpunched Jordan’s Silina Alhasanat and stormed into the 54kg quarterfinals. She is now one win away from confirming a medal at the Asian Games and securing a Paris 2024 Olympic quota as well.

In Tennis, second seed Men’s Doubles pair of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni progressed into pre-quarterfinal, overpowering Napalese pair 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.

In Women’s Cricket, Bharat will face Sri Lanka in the gold medal match tomorrow. Bharat defeated Bangladesh while Sri Lanka registered win over Pakistan in the semifinals on Sunday.

In Men’s Hockey, Bharat defeated Uzbekistan 16-0 in its opening Pool A match. With this victory, three-time Asian Games champions, Bharat climbed to the top in Pool A standings. Bharat will play Singapore on Tuesday. The top two from each pool will make the semi-finals.

In Chess, Bharat’s contingent have started with a fiery start. Koneru Humpy, D. Harika, Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujarati all have won their opening matches in the individual event.

In Swimming, Srihari Nataraj finished sixth in men’s 100m backstroke event while women’s relay team finished seventh in 4x100m relay event.
